In a statement, the General Directorate of Natural Resources, Security and Maritime Services (DGRM) said that it had consigned the contract for the maintenance dredging of the Port of Tavira, in the district of Faro, on Monday.
"The contract, with a completion period of two months, includes the dredging of 63,000 cubic meters of predominantly sandy sediments from the bar, inlet channel and interior area that includes the Quatro Águas area and the Recreio Dock, representing a total investment of half a million euros, coming entirely from the 2021 State Budget”, the note reads.
According to DGRM, the planned work will begin next week, "first with a complete survey of areas, after which the dredging will take place sequentially in the various areas".
The works also contemplate “the transport of sediments for immersion in the marine environment, and most of these will be placed in coastal drift, feeding the beaches and combating coastal erosion”, according to the DGRM.
Feeding the beaches with dredged-up sludge may not enhance the Tavira coastal area...
