While it may have been popular in recent years for Portuguese travellers to jet off to European destinations such as Paris, Rome or Madrid in the past, increasingly national tourists are looking closer to home.
According to analysis by eDreams on the main travel trends of the Portuguese this summer, travel to Portuguese islands of the Azores and Madeira has been most popular.
In 2021, travel to the capital of the Azores registered a growth of 203 percent compared to 2020, and 35 percent compared to 2019. In Funchal, the pattern is similar: there has been an increase of 245 percent in 2021 compared to 2020, and 26 percent compared to 2019.
The Top 10 national destinations this summer is also made up of two more Portuguese destinations: Ilha Terceira, which comes in 6th place, and Faro, in 10th; and among the rest we find the more traditional destinations of Paris, Barcelona, Madrid, Rome, Ibiza and Geneva.
During 2020, Portuguese travellers were found to spend less on a trip than in 2019 while there was also an increase in last minute bookings.
