Very few buildings in Lisbon managed to survive the earthquake of November 1, 1755, while other ancient buildings have been destroyed over the years, however the oldest building in Lisbon has been identified as being on Rua dos Cegos, in Alfama.
This 16th-century house witnessed and withstood the earthquake that struck Lisbon over 250 years ago thanks to its solid pillars and its location: the highest hill in the capital, according to Vortex Magazine.
Today, the oldest house in Lisbon is surrounded by other buildings of various styles, which did not respect the typical features of the houses in the city. In fact, everything indicates that the buildings neighbouring this house would have the same architectural style, but they were demolished in the 1940s.
Interesting.
