The DGS daily epidemiological bulletin counts 961 people today hospitalised for infection with the SARS-Cov-2 coronavirus, 44 more than on Wednesday, of which 142 are in intensive care units (four more).

The North is the region of the country with the most new cases diagnosed in the last 24 hours (1,161), followed by Lisbon and Vale do Tejo (1,104), the Centre (723), the Algarve (371) and the Alentejo (126).

Of the 23 deaths, 11 occurred in the North, four in Lisbon and Vale do Tejo, three in the Centre and another three in the Algarve and two in the Alentejo.

By age group, 14 people who died were over 80 years old, five between 70 and 79 years old and four between 60 and 69 years old.

The greatest number of deaths continues to be concentrated among the elderly over 80 years old (12,116 of the total 18,610 deaths from covid-19 in Portugal since the beginning of the pandemic), followed by the age groups between 70 and 79 years (4,008) and between 60 and 69 years (1,699).

There are now 65,130 active covid-19 cases (2,296 more than on Wednesday) and 1,269 people have recovered from the disease, bringing the national total of recoveries to 1,097,554.

Compared to Wednesday, health authorities have over 1,451 contacts under surveillance, totalling 83,528.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, in March 2020, the region of Lisbon and Vale do Tejo has registered 451,057 cases and 7,870 deaths.

In the North region there were 442,274 infections and 5,687 deaths and the Centre region now has a cumulative total of 167,664 infections and 3,284 deaths.

The Algarve has 51,078 infections and 541 deaths and the Alentejo has 43,331 cases and 1,069 deaths due to Covid-19.

The Autonomous Region of Madeira registered, in the last 24 hours, according to the DGS, 76 new cases, totalling 15,538 infections and 110 deaths, and the Azores registered 27 new infections, totalling 10,352 and 49 deaths.

The regional authorities of the Azores and Madeira publish their data daily, which may not coincide with the information published in the DGS bulletin.

The new coronavirus has already infected in Portugal at least 1,181,294 people - 630,242 women and 550,233 men -, indicate data from the DGS, according to which there are 819 cases of unknown sex, which are under investigation, since this information is not provided automatically.

Among the 18,610 people who have died with Covid-19 in Portugal since the start of the pandemic, 9,757 were men and 8,853 were women.
