The number of deaths recorded in the last 24 hours is the highest since February 26, 2021, when 58 deaths were reported.

A total of 1,955 people (plus 17) infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus are now hospitalised in wards, of which 160 (minus 14) are in intensive care units, reveal data from the report on the epidemiological situation assessment of the Directorate-General for Health (DGS).

The 46 new deaths associated with Covid-19 occurred in Lisbon and Vale do Tejo (25), in the North region (11), in the Centre (6), in Madeira (3) and in the Algarve (1) in the last 24 hours.

The highest number of new infections was recorded in the North region (18,116) and in Lisbon and Vale do Tejo (13,987).

Since Monday, the Centre region has registered another 6,339 new infections, the Autonomous Region of Madeira 2,117, the Alentejo (1,394), the Algarve (1,160) and the Azores (616).

The largest number of newly diagnosed infections is in the age group between 40 and 49 years old (7,798), followed by the age group from 0 to 9 years old (7,759), from 30 to 39 years old (6,723), of 10 to 19 years (6,417).

Compared to the epidemiological situation observed on the same day of 2021 in Portugal, in which 6,702 new infections were recorded, the country now has 37,027 more.

Although the number of hospitalizations has increased again today, the number remains significantly lower than a year ago, when 5,165 people were hospitalised in the ward, of which 664 were in intensive care, as well as the number of deaths.

19,380 people have died in Portugal with Covid-19 and 1,950,620 infections have been confirmed with the virus that causes the disease, with 332,786 active cases (1,628 more than the day before).

In the last 24 hours, 42,055 people were reported to have recovered, which now totals 1,598,454.

Compared to the previous day, health authorities have 23,793 more contacts under surveillance, totalling 324,954 people.

According to DGS data, 25 of the 46 fatalities were over 80 years old, 12 were between 70 and 79 years old, four were between 60 and 69 years old, two between 50 and 59 years old, two between 40 and 49 years and one between 30 and 39 years.

The highest number of deaths since the beginning of the pandemic is concentrated in the elderly over 80 years old (12,536), followed by the age groups between 70 and 79 years old (4,215) and between 60 and 69 years old (1,781).

Since the beginning of the pandemic, in March 2020, 765,436 cases and 8,174 deaths have been registered in the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region.

In the North region, there were 717,836 infections and 5,883 deaths and the Central region now has an accumulated total of 260,089 infections and 3,414 deaths.

The Algarve has a total of 75,302 infections and 609 deaths and the Alentejo has 64,824 infections and 1,103 deaths from covid-19.

The Autonomous Region of Madeira has had 48,298 infections and 142 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic and the Azores archipelago 18,835 cases and 55 deaths.

The regional authorities of the Azores and Madeira publish their data daily, which may not coincide with the information disclosed in the DGS bulletin.

In the country as a whole, 10,198 of the people who died from Covid-19 were men and 9,182 were women.
