In a statement, the office of the Minister for the Environment and Climate Action, Duarte Cordeiro, indicates that this year there will be 654 bathing waters, 11 more than in 2021.

The bathing season begins on Saturday on beaches in the municipalities of Cascais (Lisbon), Porto Santo and Porto Moniz (Madeira), on 15 May on several beaches in the district of Faro and on 1 June on most beaches in the centre and south of Portugal.

However, on some beaches the bathing season started on Sunday, May 1.

In inland waters, the beginning of the bathing season will take place between June and July.

"As with the opening, the closing of the bathing season will also be progressive from the end of August, extending until October 31 with the closure of the last beaches, located in Funchal and Porto Santo".
