Speaking to journalists in Almeirim, José Luis Carneiro
guaranteed that "all the means of the entire national Civil Protection
device" were committed to face the "demanding challenges, from a
meteorological point of view" foreseen for the coming days, with
temperatures in the district of Santarém predicted to reach 40 degrees Celsius.
However, “the means will always be limited in light of the
scale of the challenges we are faced with”, warned the Minister of Internal
Administration (MAI), alluding to “a very unique and very serious combination
of factors” that affects various parts of the country.
“We are talking about very low humidity levels, which can be
below 20%, […] during the day and also at night, which is very relevant”, said
the minister, calling for “greater attention and greater responsibility,
because, once again, the evidence related to the causes of the fires that remain
active, point to negligent behaviours”.
