According to INSA's weekly report on the evolution of Covid-19, the average daily number of infections at five days dropped from 2,769 to 2,527 at the national level, being slightly lower in mainland Portugal (2,328).


The highest average number of cases in 2022 was recorded at the end of January, with 49,795 daily SARS-CoV-2 infections.


The Rt - which estimates the number of secondary cases of infection resulting from each person carrying the virus - is now 0.99 in Portugal, after 1.02 in the last report, according to INSA.


Despite this reduction in the national Rt, three regions remain with this indicator above the threshold of 1, as in the North (1.03), the Azores (1.26) and Madeira (1.13), while the Algarve is in (1.00).


According to INSA, the Centre registers a SARS-CoV-2 transmission index of 0.97, with Lisbon and Tagus Valley at 0.96 and the Alentejo at 0.96.


The institute estimates that since 2 March, 2020, when the first cases were reported, until 2 September, Portugal has recorded a total of 5,432,692 infections.
