According to the Bank of Portugal (BdP) "between October 2021 and August 2022 - period in which prices are available - the average growth in the cost of the basket was around 15%, with prices for some products with higher variations at 20% and others with negative variations".

The BdP analysis is based on the prices set on the online platforms of the main food retailers operating in Portugal.

"Between October 2021 and August 2022, the evolution of prices per unit was very different in the products considered in the basket".

Among the main average increases, cereals and meat stand out, which in many cases exceed 20%.

Dairy products and vegetables registered smaller increases in this period, but still above 10%.

Considering the average prices for the week ended 31 August 2022, the BdP estimates that the value of the basket was higher for teenagers (168.80 euros) and lower for children aged two years old (95.02 euros).

As for the adult consumption basket, it estimates the price to be 154.88 euros.
