According to the
Consul General of Portugal in Boston, Tiago Araújo, it is "an important
commemoration, as it reflects the region's relevance to relations between
Portugal and the United States over time and, in particular, the extensive
Portuguese community that arrived here in different waves".
Speaking to Lusa,
the diplomat stressed that the Portuguese presence in Boston is asserting
itself today in all areas of society and the economy of that region, so the
celebration of the anniversary will also serve to commemorate this success.
The decision to
create the Consulate General of Portugal in Boston was taken in May 1822 and
the first consul general arrived in October 31, 1822.
"As the capital of a state on the Atlantic side of the United States, Boston's connections to Portugal could not fail to be strong. At present, there is interest in these connections contributing to a partnership in the renewal of an Atlantic vision that encompasses more on the economy, innovation, science and technology, digital and energy transitions and the fight against climate change", said the consul.
"The 200 years
will be, above all, a celebration of the success of our community, for the way
in which it has integrated and is present today in all sectors of society and
the economy of the region, including the most dynamic and innovative
sectors", concluded Tiago Araújo.
