"Historical EU decision for the climate", wrote French
MEP Pascal Canfin, from the Renew Europe group on Twitter.
The Vice-President of the Commission, responsible for the
Environment, Frans Timmermans, welcomed an agreement that "sends a strong
signal to industry and consumers: Europe has turned to emission-free
mobility".
The approved text, based on a proposal from the Commission
from July 2021, provides for the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions from new
cars in Europe to zero by 2035.
This actually corresponds to the de facto stop of sales of
new petrol or diesel vehicles and light utility vehicles in the EU on this
date, as well as hybrids (fuel-electric), in favour of 100% electric vehicles.
Although the car, the main mode of travel for Europeans,
represents a little less than 5% of total carbon dioxide emissions in the EU,
the new regulation should contribute to achieving the continent's climate
goals, in particular carbon neutrality by 2050.
This was the first agreement on a European climate package
text ('Fit for 55'), aimed at reducing EU greenhouse gas emissions by at least
55% by 2030, with reference to 1990.
The EU is run by a bunch of deeply corrupt, grey-suited, bureaucratic simpletons.
To go full-on electric is a catastrophy for everyone and every industry. Imagine tens of millions, no, hundreds of millions of electric vehicles being charged all at the same time! It's impossible.
Farmers can not go electric either. Farms are so big, by the time a farmer has done one way on his land, the vehicles' battery will be empty. It'd take him days to do the same job he'd normally do in hours. And how about delivery trucks?
Also, the batteries that are used to operate electric vehicles do not last longer than a few years and the cobalt being mined to turn into lithium batteries, is done in poor countries BY CHILDREN and slave labour!
And finally: you eco-zealots want to save the world from pollution? Why don't you start with CHINA? Responsible for over 30% of the entire worlds' CO2 emissions.
Portugal would be wise to stay far far away from anything the cretinous and unelected EU political leftovers decide on, but I'm not keeping my hopes up.
Poodle told to jump through hoop in the circus, poodle jumps.

Absolute madness. These people do not represent the wishes of the majority in the EU and have no mandate for such damaging, radical policies. People better start pushing back soon against this oppressive regime of disconnected bureaucrats.

No wonder the UK left the EU.
