Launched by CIM Douro in the summer of 2021, the passport guides visitors through the 19 municipalities that make up this inter-municipal community that covers the districts of Bragança, Guarda, Vila Real, and Viseu.

The initiative aimed to boost tourism in the Douro region after the Covid-19 pandemic and, according to a statement issued by the community, there are currently 18,000 passports on the streets.

The CIM announced that the first 40 people that completed the passport with the 76 stamps will receive a Douro tourist certificate of excellence.

The ceremony will take place on 26 November, in Peso da Régua, district of Vila Real, and also includes the offer of a 'pack' that includes a personalized box, the certificate, and a bottle of Port wine, which the Instituto dos Vinhos do Douro e Porto (IVDP) created for this initiative.

The CIM described the Passaporte Douro as "a very interesting model to take tourists around the Douro region".

This guide includes "the whole Douro": the area classified as World Heritage by UNESCO, the rivers, the terraced vineyards, the viewpoints, the monuments, the museums, the historical churches, and everything combined with history, gastronomy and the promotion of local products.

To help visitors, there is an application available that contains promotional videos of the points of interest indicated by each municipality, and, when passing by each of the referenced places, visitors can stamp their passport.

The Passaporte Douro has the partnership of Turismo do Porto e Norte and IVDP.

The CIM Douro includes the municipalities of Alijó, Armamar, Carrazeda de Ansiães, Freixo de Espada à Cinta, Lamego, Mesão Frio, Moimenta da Beira, Murça, Penedono, Peso da Régua, Sabrosa, Santa Marta de Penaguião, São João da Pesqueira, Sernancelhe, Tabuaço, Tarouca, Torre de Moncorvo, Vila Nova de Foz Côa and Vila Real.
