“The €45 payment will be made tomorrow [Tuesday]. It is the first support for the year 2023”, said Ana Mendes Godinho to journalists, in Fátima (Santarém), noting that “it is a support calculated on a monthly basis of 15 euros per child”, but paid quarterly.
“This is the first payment and it will cover about 1.1 million children in Portugal”, she said.
In March, the Council of Ministers approved additional support for family allowances, to be paid to each child and young person receiving family allowances, representing a monthly amount of 15 euros, paid quarterly in 2023.
This support covers holders of family allowance for children and young people, corresponding to the 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th income bracket of the household.
Not good news. The government shouldn't be handing out cash to people. There is no such thing as 'free' money. The government shouldn't be attempting to finance people's lifestyles with handouts. This payment will involve higher taxes for the population, or increased debt. It's a bit like asking a family to pay €100/month more in tax to fund a welfare payment to them of......€100/month!
