The region is again nominated for the award of Best Beach Destination in Europe, after having already been recognised nine times, but is also up for the Best Sustainable Tourist Destination Europe 2023, a new category of awards that reward excellence in the travel and tourism sector globally.

Algarve tourist accommodation has 42 nominations in different categories, including Best Beach Hotel, Best Beach Resort, Best Family Resort, Best Lifestyle Resort or Best Leisure Resort in Europe.

“Tourism in the Algarve is much more committed to sustainable development and these nominations result from everyone’s awareness of the need to implement good practices and change behaviours to make tourism a viable economic activity in the long term”, said the president of Turismo do Algarve, João Fernandes. “At the same time, the Algarve is currently perceived as a more cosmopolitan destination compared to its main international competitors, as attested by the dozens of nominations from the region's hotels in key categories”.

In the race for Best Sustainable Tourist Destination in Europe 2023, the Algarve faces the Madeira Archipelago, Baden-Württemberg (Germany), Dubrovnik (Croatia), Edinburgh (Scotland), Majorca (Spain), Pembrokeshire (Wales) and the Region of Attica (Greece).

Voting runs until August 20 at www.worldtravelawards.com/vote and is open to the general public as well as travel and tourism professionals, with the winner announced at the end of September, during a gala taking place in Batumi, in Georgia.
