It’s formed through heating the shells in an oxygen-free room to 600ºC, which expels impurities. However, everything must be done locally, as transport would disrupt the carbon-negative cycle.
Chocolate charcoal
A factory in Hamburg is taking cocoa bean shells from the neighbouring chocolate factory and converting them into biochar, a material capable of storing carbon and being used in fertilisers and concrete.
