For too long the idea of going to the therapist has been associated with severe mental illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or clinical depression. And although it is used in those cases together with medication, therapy is the most valuable tool to help us understand ourselves, identify what is stopping us from thriving, learn to understand how we relate to ourselves and others, developing our self support, self esteem, self responsibility and self regulation.

As a Gestalt therapist, I work with people from all walks of life and we all have very similar unresolved issues that are not allowing us to be in alignment and experience the joy and plenitude of what it is to be at peace with ourselves and the world around us. Here are a few of the most common ones:

• childhood trauma

• stress, anxiety, overwhelm

• lack of self-confidence/worth

• recurrent negative thoughts

• grief and loss

• going through important life transitions

• communication issues

• problems setting boundaries

• lack of self-love and self-care

• perfectionism and self-judgement

• procrastination

• feeling lost

So let me ask you a question: how many of these points on the list have you experienced or are experiencing right now? I could almost assure, without knowing you, that there are 2-3 that resonate with you. Am I right? Most of us have quite a list of unresolved issues that we’d rather hide under the rug with the hope that they’ll simply go away. There’s the famous saying “Time heals all wounds”, but the truth is, that without putting in the work, all time does is pass by and the moment something shakes us, the dormant dragon gets triggered and explodes in rage (or sadness or fear). If time healed, adults wouldn’t still be dealing with childhood trauma, would they?

It’s time to get over the stigma of going to the therapist and rather, decide that it is about time to do something about what doesn’t feel good anymore. It’s time to take responsibility for ourselves so we can grow into our best selves, stop blaming others/society for how difficult everything is, and take it into our hands to dive deep so our relationships flourish. We can only relate to others as far as we relate to ourselves.

I am holding a wonderful retreat this summer from July 16 to July 23 at Quinta Carvalhas, near Santarem. A whole week of healing, self love, joy, rest, creativity and deep connection. I want to share all my knowledge and passion with you if you are ready to say Yes! to yourself. If you want to see changes, you can’t continue doing the same things. “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.” (attributed to Albert Einstein) So, would you like to try something different this time?
