The Royal Mint has released a new 50p coin which celebrates the 75th anniversary of the HMT Empire Windrush’s arrival at Tilbury.

The ship carried immigrants from Jamaica and other Caribbean countries between 1948 and 1971, many of whom had served under the UK in WW2. The coin was designed by artist Valda Jackson.

This story is actual a bit of a myth, the UK gov did not invite them, it was the shipping company that advertised tickets to travel to the uk on that ship travelling from Australia. These were economic migrants since the unemployment rate in their country was over 25% at that time.
They did not come to join forces for WWII since they arrived in 1948 and the war finished in 1945.
