Based on statistics, the typical adult in Ireland currently spends €28.26 per month on subscriptions to video streaming services, totalling €1.3 billion annually.
According to a Pure Telecom report, since 2021, the total amount spent on video streaming has climbed by more than €330 million.
For Jonathan Long, head of operations at Pure Telecom, there might be a lot of factors contributing to the surge, including better bandwidth.
“I think there is a need for it in some consumer behavioural segments. Broadband has increased availability and enhanced speed since it can be delivered directly to users' homes.”
He continued: “I think that streaming is a big part of many people's lives now, and it's showing that there is a big increase in the demand for it. The focus is now on streaming services, moving away from conventual TV and other entertainment type services.”
Jim Sheridan, an Irish filmmaker, claimed that live television needs greater assistance to thrive.
“It is on the verge of extinction. In the US, cable will be phased off first, followed by RTÉ and the BBC.”
“They won't go as long as the government keeps them alive, and that probably needs to happen much like the government of Ireland keeps screen Ireland going.”
