In a briefing held at 11:40 am at the command post installed in São Teotónio, in Odemira (district of Beja), the regional commander of Emergency and Civil Protection of the Algarve, Vítor Vaz Pinto, stated that in the entire perimeter of the fire there are few active flames.
However, he underlined, it is expected that there will be “many reactivations throughout the day”, because the wind has changed quadrants and “will affect mainly the south front”, which touches the Algarve municipalities of Monchique and Aljezur (Faro district).
According to Vítor Vaz Pinto, who updated that the burnt area to 8,400 hectares (on Tuesday the balance was 10,000 hectares), the fire, whose perimeter extends over 50 kilometers, will still concern of Civil Protection over the next few days.
During the night from Tuesday to today, seven more people were assisted, one of whom was transported to a hospital unit, which brings to 42 the number of people assisted on the spot and to nine the number of citizens transported to hospital units.
There are still 1,051 personnel at the site, supported by 320 vehicles, 11 crawler machines and 15 aerial vehicles, he added.
