"Renting a house costs an average of 1,653 euros, and people search for houses with an average value of 866 euros", concluded the real estate portal, pointing out that "this big difference between demand and supply in rent is mostly influenced by the district of Lisbon and also by the properties in the luxury segment that are on the market".
With regard to the sale of houses, a similar situation was observed, in which the price of houses is 72% higher than the values that people intend to pay, and, in the last three months, at a national level, buying a house costs on average 414,928 euros, while people search for homes worth an average of 241,082 euros.
The Socialists created and extended this situation. They will not stop until half the Portuguese population has either left the country, died or lives in tents.

This very nasty Housing ‘crisis’ for the locals or the Portuguese in general, has without any shadow of a doubt been ‘extended’ by these lost souls the other reader has labelled as Socialists however. The last CDS party at the time in government with the PSD (coligação) created this whole mess, when it meddled with the housing legislation which then went on to be approved by the PSD and began the Golden Visa programs for specifically the Chinese and where overnight, the prices of a normal home were sold (at the time mainly by the Banks portfolio) for 2x even 3x again to the Chinese.

I don't want to get too political, but I have to agree with the other comments. When the government intervenes in the market with a heavy hand, landlords and would-be landlords take note. They either increase their rent to such a degree as to cover any future government interventions (e.g. rent caps, inability to evict, etc) or get out of the market altogether, leaving would-be tenants with little or no choice and sky-high rents.
