Data published by the EU statistical office indicate that, in 2021, Greece (629.2) and Portugal (562.04) recorded the highest numbers of doctors authorised to practice per 100 thousand inhabitants, followed by Austria (540.9).
Conversely, the lowest ratios were recorded in France (318.3), Belgium (324.8) and Hungary (329.8).
In all, it is estimated that in 2021 the EU had 1.82 million doctors in practice, with the highest absolute numbers registered in the largest countries in the community, including Germany (377 thousand, equivalent to 21% of the EU total), Italy (243 thousand), France (216 thousand) and Spain (213 thousand).
Is that why the majority of Portuguese don't have a family doctor? Is that why the only medical care worthy of such an expression is with the cost of the private sector?
