When the demonstration approached City Hall, a small group with Israeli flags challenged it and insults were exchanged.

The movement was held against the backdrop of the escalating Middle East crisis, in which residents are still suffering under an Israeli-imposed absolute blockade following an extraordinary assault by Hamas terrorists.

Concern has been voiced by the UN, prominent EU officials, and relief organisations as many Palestinians attempt to escape in front of a “coordinated” attack in the Gaza Strip that involves air, ground, and marine troops.

The protest began on Sunday in Belfast's Writer's Square, and as it marched along Royal Avenue, more people joined, waving flags, and shouting pro-Palestinian phrases.

Many of the main thoroughfares in the city centre were closed as part of a massive security operation carried out by the PSNI.

A few people with Israel flags stood in front of the gates as the demonstration got closer to City Hall.

As police intervened to keep the two groups of protestors apart, there were heated confrontations. The demonstrators were insulting one other.

Dr. Raied Al-Wazzan of the Northern Ireland Council for Racial Equality was among the participants in the pro-Palestinian demonstration.

“We need to send the Palestinian people a message that we are with them, that we support them, and that we oppose the bombardment of civilian areas. We oppose the Gaza blockade.”

“We desire that all individuals lead equal lives and possess the same set of rights.”

MP for Sinn Féin One of the people marching in front of the demonstration was Pat Sheehan.

He had earlier presented a painting in favour of Palestinians in west Belfast.

“One would be forgiven for thinking it is the Israelis who are living under occupation, rather than the Palestinians,” he stated in his speech at this gathering.

“It is evident to all of us here that those governments who call for the application of international law in other conflicts remain completely silent when thousands of Palestinians are being killed,” he continued.

“Israel now has complete authority to operate in defiance of both international law and fundamental military doctrines.”

“The international community in the west has responded in a disgraceful manner.

“What is occurring in Palestine at this time is the result of a cruel 75-year occupation.”

“The Palestinians' desire for freedom and an independent Palestinian state cannot and will not be crushed by military force on the part of the Israelis.”
