The spectacular show will elucidate the stories and legends from Ireland's mythical past via a magnificent fusion of colour, light, and sound above the old structures of Drogheda Town.
Discover the legends of Boann, the Salmon of Knowledge, Amergin, the Gods of Newgrange, and many more as you travel through time along the route. These enchanted tales, which have their origins in the stunning Boyne Valley area, are the main subject of the illuminations.
Using the most up-to-date digital technology, projection, sound, and animation, eight days of breathtaking illuminations and projections will light up Drogheda's Old Abbey, St. Peters Church, St. Dominic's Bridge, the former Methodist Church Garden, and St. Laurence's Gate, weaving a captivating tale of our mythological past.
Lú Festival of Light, Drogheda, an incredible showcase of urban animation, is free to visit and takes place over two extended weekends, October 27–31 and November 2-4.
According to Colin Hindle, Festival Officer at Fáilte Ireland, “Lú Festival of Light is an exciting addition to the visitor offering in Drogheda and adds another unique experience for visitors to enjoy in Ireland's Ancient East.”
“This is the second year of the festival, which tells the many myths and legends associated with the region, tying into the ancient theme of the area, using spectacular light animations, partially funded under Fáilte Ireland's Urban Animation Scheme.”
The audio commentary, composed by Anthony Murphy of Mythical Ireland and the Irish business Visual Spectrum, will complement the breathtaking images.
Using state-of-the-art technology, Visual Spectrum developed and produced the animation and live music, digitally mapping the structures to create an audio-visual spectacle that will astonish the senses.
A variety of street acts, such as fire breathers, face painters, and stilt walkers, will also be featured during the event.
For festival-goers who want to get a bite to eat, the local cafes, pubs, and restaurants will remain open late. At the Old Abbey parking lot, there will also be a family fun area with a Viking Encampment.
The event is an effort of Love Drogheda BIDS and Louth County Council, with partial funding provided by Fáilte Ireland under the Fáilte Ireland Urban Animation Scheme.
