According to Executive Digest, “The evolution of prices in euros points to a drop in the price of gasoline 95. Diesel will fall by up to one cent per liter”.

Data from the General Directorate of Energy and Geology (DGEG) show that the average price of a liter of gasoline in Portugal currently costs 1,766 euros while that of diesel is worth 1,699 euros. You can see the recent changes in prices in the graph below – since September – which confirm the general decline in fuel prices.

Quotes may, however, vary across petrol stations, as the price set on the network also takes into account the level of competition, supply and demand in each market and the level of fixed costs at each station. According to data from the General Directorate of Energy and Geology (DGEG), gasoline 95 has risen, since the beginning of July, by 10 cents, a growth 'replicated' by diesel, which increased, in the same period, by 20.3 cents, to which is added the gradual unfreezing of the carbon tax, proposed by the Government, which represented an additional increase of 2 cents.

This means that filling a 60 litre tank of diesel costs 13.38 euros more than at the beginning of July. To top up a gas tank, the bill is around 6 euros more expensive.

Portugal has the 10th most expensive 95 gasoline in Europe

The European Commission's most recent fuel bulletin indicates that Portugal has the 10th most expensive 95 gasoline in Europe, around 1.3 cents above the European average and 11.6 cents more expensive than Spain. Diesel occupies the 15th position in the European ranking.

In this regard, the Netherlands has the most expensive 95 gasoline on the Old Continent: 2,009 euros. It is the only country with values above the 2 euros per liter barrier. Sweden 'reigns' in diesel: 2,076 euros, followed by Finland, with 2,015 euros.
