Luís Montenegro was speaking during a visit to the site where the dam is expected to be built, after hearing the president of the Association of Regantes do Sotavento Algarvio, Macário Correia, present the project, as part of a four-day tour that the PSD president ends today in the Algarve.
“We are experiencing the worsening of the drought situation year after year, we are year after year with very debatable patch solutions and we are year after year hesitating in our strategy. And I think that this strategy [of building a new dam in Foupana] is a correct strategy”, stated the president of the PSD in a conversation with Macário Correia and the vice-president of the Chamber of Castro Marim, Filomena Sintra.
Montenegro argued that it is important not to always think about “large projects”, which “take longer”, as is the case with “the management of water itself throughout the country’s territory and the transport of some capacity to the southern part of the country” that exists in the north of the country.
“I don't have a dogmatic notion about this, I think we should look at it, I have the notion that the country doesn't actually have a lack of water, what it does have is poor management of the water it has, it's clear that in one region or another, there is actually a lack and it has to be supplied. I can say that I am even more aware so that we can follow this project closely”, added the social democratic leader.
