The campaign “At the wheel, your cell phone can wait”, under the responsibility of the National Road Safety Authority (ANSR), the Public Security Police (PSP) and the National Republican Guard (GNR) inspected 47,766 vehicles, between November 28 and December 4.

The GNR inspected 34,939 vehicles, with 330 violations for improper use of a cell phone detected.

For its part, the PSP inspected 12,827 vehicles and recorded 97 infractions.

During the period of the ANSR, PSP and GNR campaign, 2,937 accidents were recorded, resulting in six deaths, 38 serious injuries and 814 minor injuries.

The fatal victims, five men and one woman were aged between 18 and 74 and resulted from three run-overs and three crashes, involving a total of four light vehicles, a heavy vehicle, a motorcycle and a moped.

Accidents with fatalities occurred in the districts of Vila Real, Braga, Viana do Castelo, Porto, Aveiro and Setúbal.

Concerning the same period of 2022, there were 244 more accidents, one less death, 13 more serious injuries and 94 more minor injuries.

According to a statement from the security forces, the campaign is part of the 2023 National Inspection Plan (PNF) and was publicised on digital media, on Variable Message Panels and through four ANSR awareness-raising actions, carried out simultaneously with the inspection of the operation carried out by the PSP and GNR in Alverca, Chaves, Bragança and Porto.

Inspection and awareness-raising actions were also carried out in the autonomous regions of the Azores of Madeira.
