Portugal heading towards world's largest almond producer
Portugal is on the verge of becoming one of the world's leading almond producers, with a notable 20% increase in production compared to last year, according to the executive director of Portugal Nuts - Association for the Promotion of Dried Fruits, in comments to Dinheiro Vivo.

This is nothing to celebrate. 12 liters of water is required to produce a single almond. This is an insanely resource-intensive nut, especially for a country/region that is always under threat of drought. We should be looking at farming sustainable crops, not depleting our precious resources in order to export to wealthier countries.

I must agree with the previous comment! California’s almond industry has destroyed biodiversity, is subject to hundreds of legal cases for this and is responsible for the eradication of almost all local bees and species in their region.
The quoted estimate is 2-3 BILLION bees annually due to their pesticides.
Ironically almond production is dependent on bees, so hundreds of bee keepers are called in every year from around the US to bring their hives to California for a month!
The almond industry is driven by big agro-chemical industry and global food marketing companies, a response to demand by Starbucks, Costa and others for ‘vegan’ alternatives to milk.
If I was responsible for Portuguese agriculture, I would inspect and demand complete compliance to organic and pesticide free practices.
