In a statement, the municipality announced that it signed cooperation protocols with the associations Ajuda Alimentar Cães, SPAD – Sociedade Protetora dos Animais Domésticos do Funchal, Patinhas Risonhas and Vamos Lá Madeira, and increased the value of support to €15 thousand for each association.

The municipality’s objective is to double the number of sterilisations in 2024, to more than 1,300 animals, particularly in animals belonging to families with economic struggles.

“With this protocol the associations are responsible for identifying and selecting animals to sterilise, as well as providing the means of accommodation and transport necessary to collect the animals to the veterinary facilities where the surgeries will be carried out”, explains the municipality.

In accordance with the president of the municipality, Pedro Calado, this year 600 animal sterilisations were recorded, and in the last two years the executive has invested more than one million euros in the animal cause.

In 2024, the Funchal City Council will also finance a veterinary teleconsultation project.
