“Liga Portugal welcomes the decision of FIFA and IFAB to allow the on-field referee's decisions in video referee intervention situations to be communicated by the referee to the public and live in the stadium, through sound installation, and at home, through television broadcast”, according to the LPFP.

The organization recalls that a long time ago, together with the clubs, “they identified this measure as a way of bringing fans closer to the game and understanding the decisions taken by the refereeing teams through the use of the VAR system”.

In this way, the League “will make every effort to achieve what is proposed”, starting with the 'final four' matches of the League Cup, which will be played in Leiria, between the 23rd and 27th.

The measure, in the first phase in test mode, will be applied in competitions in which the VAR system is implemented, in professional competitions and in the final phase of League 3, and now, CA is waiting for the Club League to indicate the stadiums that meet the conditions for its execution.

This system already exists in other sports, such as rugby, and has already been tested by FIFA in competitions such as the 2023 Women's World Cup.

The authorisation from FIFA and IFAB allows Portugal to be one of the pioneers to move towards a testing phase of this system, although it is not yet certain when this will begin.

Since September 2023, communications between referees and video referees (VAR) of Portuguese football I League games have been carried out through a monthly television program.
