Wooden Satellites

Researchers at Kyoto University believe that wooden satellites could make space exploration more environmentally friendly and are preparing to launch a satellite made of magnolia wood.

The timber, which astronaut Koichi Wakata tested in space, was shown to withstand extreme temperature fluctuations.

An international project led by KyotoU tested and confirmed the high wood durability of space wood at the International Space Station. The experiment results showed minimal deterioration and good stability of the samples selected for the wooden artificial satellite LignoSat. pic.twitter.com/mHBMjjgJeM

The team indicates this could be an alternative to the metal in satellites which leaves behind toxic particles.
