Leaders of the Government party approved the hiring of the former managing partner of the accounting company KPMG on Monday night.
In addition, Mr. O'Rourke is the ESB's current chairman. He was educated at University College Dublin and is a chartered accountant from Inniskeen, County Monaghan.
He began working at KPMG in 1975, and from 2006 until his retirement in April 2013, he served as managing partner for KPMG Ireland.
He served as President of the Irish Institute of Chartered Accountants when he was employed at KPMG.
In addition, Mr. O'Rourke served as Enterprise Ireland's chair before.
According to his bio on the ESB website, he has “a wide breadth of business skills with high-level experience in commercial, finance, decision-making, and strategy development roles collaborating with clients in Ireland and abroad.”
Catherine Martin, the minister of media, will ask the cabinet to approve the appointment this morning.
Following Minister Martin's appearance on RTÉ Prime Time last month, during which she declined to express confidence in her, the former chair, Siún Ní Raghallaigh, resigned.
Later, Minister Martin informed the Oireachtas Committee on Media that Ms. Ní Raghallaigh had given her false information twice in one week regarding the board's role in departure arrangements at the station.
The Taoiseach previously said that the selection of two new board members and a new chair for the RTÉ Board would be a significant advancement.
Leo Varadkar stated that having a fully operational board was crucial and that, although it was challenging, it was not impossible to fill these positions.
He went on to say that the government anticipates having the two final assessments on RTÉ out in a few weeks.
According to him, these reports on culture and governance will guarantee that RTÉ is managed and operated more effectively going forward.
The Taoiseach stated that such extra inspection would be an excellent idea, even if no policy decision to give the Comptroller and Auditor General authority of RTÉ's finances has been made yet.
The Public Accounts Committee Chair, Brian Stanley, said on Sunday that his colleagues will advocate for RTÉ to be placed within the Comptroller and Auditor General's purview.
The PAC will release its final report on the situation at the national broadcaster.
