This survey was carried out among users of the Condé Nast Johansens website and the printed guides “Condé Nast Johansens: Luxury Hotels 2024” and “Condé Nast Johansens: Luxury Spas 2024”.
Of the travellers in the luxury segment who were looking to travel outside of the UK, Portugal is in sixth place with 16% of preference, behind Spain as the preferred destination with 30%, France (27%), Italy (19% ), Greece and the United States (with 17%).
As for the number of trips planned for this year, 33% intend to take three or four, followed by 27% who plan to take two. However, 44% want to leave in September, followed by June (39%), May (37%) and April or October (both 34%), with the majority (45%) declaring that they will stay for three to six nights followed by 32% who will do the same but between seven and nine nights. 27% of respondents plan to take weekend getaways. Plans to travel with the family occupy only 26% of the total respondents, compared to 75% who want to travel with their partner and 30% with friends.
The results of the survey show that increasingly luxury travellers prefer to book directly through the hotel website (68%), and 56% declare that they will do so with an online travel agency, compared to 13% who will do so at a physical travel agency.
The study also indicates that, for the first time, urban destinations (65%) increase in relation to beach destinations (55%), followed by 48% of those who want to enjoy rural and countryside destinations, and 36% who want to relax in a spa and wellness resort.
The price of accommodation continues to be the key factor when deciding on a destination, even if it is luxury tourism. For 64% of respondents, it is the first reason to take into account, followed by climate and weather (62%), for 56% it is the cost of the trip, for 54% if the hotel offers discounts and promotions, the duration of the trip to reaching the holiday destination by 47% and in fifth place the flexibility to cancel the reservation (43%).
