According to a post by @Land_geist based on numbers from Eurostat, in Portugal, a total of 21.4% of people drink alcohol on a daily basis.
The percentage in Portugal is considerably higher than the next country in Europe on the list, neighbouring Spain where the number is 13.5%. The third country on the list is Italy with 12.4%.
At the other end of the table, with the lowest percentage of the population consuming alcohol on a daily basis, is Turkey with 0.5%, followed by Lithuania with 0.8%, and then Iceland with 1.1%.
That tells you just how good the wine, beer and port is in Portugal.

We have fabulous Portuguese red wine every night with dinner, a weekend treat when we were work slaves. I look on it as my daily dose of resveratol, good for the heart, good for the soul, good for the economy. To quote Churchill "I have taken more out of alcohol than alcohol has taken out of me.”

The numbers for Ireland make sense. If it's
not 40% alcohol, it doesn't count. Beer is what you give your kids. Ireland doesn't exactly have ideal climate for wine, like Portugal. Alcohol is probably defined as wine or liquor. Since Portugal's wine is so damn good, and cheap, it's easy to consume a lot. Portugal has the highest rate of wine consumption per capita, out of EVERY country in the world. 52 liters per year on average. Obviously the amount is higher because most people under 18 don't drink wine.

51.6 liters to be exact...

The article is misleading. It shows only part of the Eurostat report on alcohol consumption. More important is the amount of alcohol consumed per person per year. On this measure Ireland ranks higher than Portugal.
On the daily consumption of alcohol, it is common for Portuguese to have a glass of beer or wine with lunch each working day; this is why Portugal is tops for daily consumption.
