Tap water in Portugal is cheaper compared to bottled water. According to data from Selectra, released on Tuesday, a litre of tap water costs, on average, €0.0017, making it up to 99% cheaper than bottled water.
"This discrepancy in costs is notable, especially when we consider the average water consumption of a family throughout the year", explains the company in a statement.
Selectra recalls that, according to the Water and Waste Services Regulatory Authority (ERSAR), "the percentage of safe water in mainland Portugal is 98.96%, a value considered excellent".
"And best of all: it is a much more affordable alternative compared to bottled water".
I’m all for tap water. Plastic is a major environmental catastrophe. The problem with tap water, where I live here in central Coimbra is that the water is loaded with tons of minerals and who knows what else. The tap water I was using on my coffee maker broke it. I now use a brita carafe.

It amazes me that some restaurants can fill their own bottles with tap water and charge €5 for a litre!! I’m sure those bottles pay for themselves in one night!!
