There will be five seats up for grabs in the Midlands-Northwest Constituency, where Mr. Casey plans to run as an independent.

In addition to finishing second in the 2018 presidential contest, Mr. Casey was unsuccessful in gaining a seat in the 2019 European elections.

The businessman ran in the general election of 2020 but was unsuccessful in gaining a seat.

He has already faced backlash for his divisive remarks against immigrants and the travelling community.

Former Green Party member Saoirse McHugh is also a candidate for the Midlands-Northwest Constituency, running as an independent.

Ms. McHugh placed sixth in the most recent European elections when she ran.

She ran for the Green Party in the 2020 General Election and placed sixth. Following the party's alliance formation with Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil, Ms. McHugh departed the group.

The current MEP Luke Ming Flanagan, Fine Gael's Maria Walsh, and Sinn Féin's Chris MacManus are among the other contenders vying for the five seats in the constituency.

Senator Pauline O’Reilly of the Green Party, Fine Gael candidate and former racetracker Nina Carberry, and Sinn Féin’s second candidate, Michelle Gildernew, MP.
