According to the annual activity report of the Superior Council of the Judiciary (CSM), 1,325 judges in full service were in the courts of first instance (38 of which were on a probationary basis), 394 judges in the courts of Appeal and 58 advisory judges at the Supreme Court of Justice.

At the level of districts, Lisbon and Porto are those with the highest number of judges placed, with 168 and 173 respectively. Bragança and Portalegre have the fewest magistrates, each of the districts with 15.

In 2023, 52 judges left office due to retirement, 13 fewer than in 2022.
