Production of the new version of the identification document has already started and the first card will be delivered today, a source from the Ministry of Justice explained to Lusa.

This new card was announced by the outgoing Government in March, as being "safer and more digital" and that it is a "very innovative" card, with contactless technology to simplify the reading of information and open new ways of use.

In line with the latest European legislation and security standards, the new card has a second chip with 'contactless' technology for greater physical and electronic security, allowing it to be used both in public services and in the private sector, without the need for use of a card reader, explains the Ministry on its website.

It is through 'contactless' technology that the new citizen card will be able to be used as a transport ticket throughout the country, making it possible to associate electronic tickets for shows, in addition to being able to serve as a means of authentication in a digital or in-person service.

Although it is a physical card, around 50% of the characteristics are digital, integrating more than 30 physical, electronic, and digital security elements, with innovative materials, highlighting the Ministry that the card remains, to date, one of the identity documents safest in the world.

The photo of the new card holder is now larger, to allow better identification of the Identity card holder, and the chip is now on the back.

The new identity card also aims to improve precision and efficiency in border control and security processes, and also guaranteeing secure and forgery-proof travel documents.
