Margarida Blasco stressed that this operation will “provide more and better security and protection conditions to citizens or those who choose Portugal” this summer.

The government official presided over the presentation of the “Safe Summer 2024” Programme, in force between 15 June and 15 September, carried out by the country's main security and civil protection authorities.

The Minister of Internal Administration highlighted the importance of PSP, GNR, and Civil Protection promoting “more integrated responses during this period”, carrying out “collaborative work” and developing “coordinated and complementary actions”.

This operation is repeated every year during the summer, when there is a growing number of tourists in the areas under the territorial responsibility of these forces, such as in the Algarve, where there is a substantial increase in population.

The 'Safe Summer' programme was only carried out in the Algarve, but in 2023 it was extended to Lisbon, Porto, and beaches with greater tourist pressure, due to the increase in tourists and World Youth Day.

The National Republican Guard (GNR) will, for example, reinforce patrolling, support, and inspection, especially in areas with larger concentrations of holidaymakers and tourists.

The Guard's actions cover summer resorts, events, nightlife establishments and venues, main road axes, borders, residences and forest protection.

The Public Security Police (PSP) aims to increase the population's sense of security during the summer season, concentrating its operational capacity on bathing, tourist and commercial areas, nightlife areas, residential areas and main road arteries, especially those that serve bathing areas and where there is a greater influx of people and vehicles, as well as a greater number of public transport users.

Margarida Blasco declined to speak about the negotiations with the PSP unions and GNR associations, despite the insistence of journalists, limiting herself to repeating that she will only address this issue with the media after the meeting between the two parties scheduled for 9 July.
