During the signing of the collaboration protocol for the installation of the new library in the park, officials highlighted the place will serve to immortalise, in life, the name of the great physicist from the city.

“This space will take on a new life, a new mission. We’re going to enrich Coimbra with a new library, which will be a part of the Municipal Library, with the collaboration of Águas de Coimbra, in a place that will be rebuilt without losing its history, by a talented Coimbra architect: João Mendes Ribeiro”, José Manuel Silva, mayor of Coimbra, announced.

The adaptation works that will take place over the course of a few months are part of an investment of around €100 million and will involve the addition of several shelves on the upper floor and a suspended shelf on the lower floor, where the water usually reaches when there are floods.

The Carlos Fiolhais Library will receive approximately €20,000 a year for programming, which will be focused on the intersection of art, science and technology, in a space that will include the cooperation of physics.

Physicist Carlos Fiolhais “one of the most quoted Portuguese scientists in the world”, was awarded the Gold Medal of the City of Coimbra at the beginning of the month.
