According to an analysis to estimate Airbnb's economic impact in Portugal, the accommodation platform concluded that "trips through Airbnb generated more than €2.4 billion in revenue and almost €1.1 billion in taxes" in the country in 2023.
The estimated tax amount includes those associated with hosts' income and expenses, economic activity resulting from guests' visits to local businesses, and also "more than €63.3 million in tourist taxes collected and remitted by Airbnb on behalf of hosts in the cities of Lisbon and Porto".
The projected revenue amount was calculated based on feedback from 4,000 guests on the platform in Portugal, surveyed between January 1, 2023 and December 31, 2023, revealing that "in 2023, guests on Airbnb reported spending around 116 euros per day during their trip and approximately 38% of these expenses were made in the neighbourhood/area where they were staying".
Taking into account the direct and indirect impact of trips through this platform, Airbnb also estimates that it is possible to support 55,000 jobs in Portugal, the majority of which (60%) are linked to restaurants, local businesses and shops, entertainment, and events.
This study was carried out using IMPLAN Cloud, "software that combines data and analytics to better understand how home sharing supports economic activity in local communities in Portugal", Airbnb indicates in a statement.
