Government plans to double public housing by 2030

The Government plans to “more than double the public housing supply” under the Recovery and Resilience Plan, raising the construction target to 58,993 homes by 2030, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Housing announced.

In a statement sent to journalists, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Housing justifies the reinforcement by saying that “the financial allocation included in the Housing Access Support Programme”, under the Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP), “did not cover the country’s real housing needs”.

In view of this, the Government wants to exceed the 26,000 homes initially planned in the RRP and reach 58,993 homes, that is, responding to “all of the approximately 59,000 homes applied for” support from the 1st Right Programme.

According to the information provided, the increase will be 2,011 million euros, totalling an additional investment of 2.8 billion euros compared to what was planned, and the amount will be financed by the State Budget.

The Minister of Infrastructure and Housing, Miguel Pinto Luz, has already noted on several occasions that the 26,000 homes planned through the RRP are not enough to respond to the housing crisis.

Shameful! No country should have social(ist) housing, as it's hugely subsidised and therefore yields a poor return for the taxpayer. No-one should be getting subsidised housing from the state, as that is giving them a privilege at the expense of the taxpayer. We're all paying more tax than otherwise would be required. People should take responsibility for their lives, and expect to pay market rates for renting a home or buying one privately.

The Government Should invest in infrastructure the more the better, remember all rich nations, they invest in infrastructure heavily, like roads, highways, railways, airports, restaurants, public places, apartment and condominium buildings, housing, parks, camping, trailer parks, etc. That's what attracts foreign investment, business, and tourism, and it all goes towards making the economy strong and prosperous.
