In a statement, the Aveiro City Council calls on the population to reduce water consumption to the bare minimum and informs that the Municipal Civil Protection Plan has been activated due to the fires raging in the district.

According to the statement, due to the ash caused by the fires, there is a risk that the Carvoeiro Water Supply Plant will be forced to cut off the water supply to the municipality.

“To avoid this scenario, it is very important for everyone to contribute to rationing water in companies, homes and garden and crop irrigation systems”, the local authority warns.

Companies in the Cacia Industrial Zone, with fires in their vicinity, are urged to use “all fire protection and firefighting mechanisms that they have installed and in their possession”.

According to the official Civil Protection website, at 12:54, three rural fires were being fought in the Aveiro region, considered to be “significant incidents”: in Albergaria-a-Velha, with 179 firefighters in 55 vehicles; Sever do Vouga, with 178 firefighters, 60 vehicles and one aircraft; and in Oliveira de Azeméis, with 588 firefighters, 198 vehicles and three aircraft.

“Due to the current situation, the Mayor of Aveiro has cancelled his visit to the Committee of the Regions of the European Union, in Oulu, Finland, which will take place on the 17th and 18th”, the statement also states.
