Created by Polish producer Lukasz Gieranczyk and Brazilian director Thiago Yoshinaga, the show, which premiered in September, offers a fresh perspective on the lives of immigrants in Portugal – an increasingly significant demographic, representing about 10 percent of the country’s population, according to data from AIMA.
Gieranczyk, who is fluent in Portuguese thanks to his childhood and adolescent years spent in Brazil, said the first season resonated with audiences because it presented a light yet realistic portrayal of what it’s like to be a foreigner in Portugal. “I think people connected with the stories because we were able to showcase different perspectives in a relaxed and engaging way while keeping a realistic approach to the immigrant experience”, he explained.
The upcoming season promises to delve even deeper into the diverse realities of foreigners living in Portugal, inviting both immigrants and locals to share their stories. The series will continue to feature not only Brazilians but also immigrants from other countries, offering a range of viewpoints and highlighting the varied experiences of foreigners in Portugal.
One of the key themes will focus on the growing trend of digital nomads in Portugal, as the country has become one of the most sought-after destinations for remote workers seeking a blend of good weather, vibrant culture, and affordable living. The season will also explore the experiences of foreign students, who come to Portugal for education, as well as the role of football in helping immigrants integrate into Portuguese society.
Other episodes will examine how friendships are formed in a foreign country, Portugal’s booming fitness culture, and the rise of dog-friendly spaces as more people bring their pets into the urban landscape. Additionally, the series will showcase Portugal’s lively nightlife scene, an essential part of the country’s cultural identity.
“Bitoques & Imperiais” provides an invaluable window into the lives of those who have chosen to make Portugal their home, exploring the joys, challenges, and surprises of navigating a new life in a foreign country.
