In a message published on the official website of the Presidency of the Republic on the Internet, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa "congratulates President-elect Donald Trump, wishing him well in his new term”, while affirming “transatlantic relationships, democracy and human rights, the construction of sustainable peace and progress".

In the same note, the Portuguese President recalls that "Portugal was the first neutral country to recognise the independence of the United States of America”, along with “the importance of the Portuguese community in the country, as well as collaboration during his first term, which included the meeting at the White House in 2018".

In statements to journalists, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said that given the result of the elections, it is important to work together with the future Donald Trump administration.

"The American people have voted, they have chosen who they should choose, in the sense that it was their decision, and their decision alone. Now it's time to work together, Portugal and the United States of America, and Europe and the United States of America".

When asked if he intended to return to Washington, the President of the Republic admitted this possibility, but highlighted that "it depends a lot now on what happens in the future, in terms of availability from one side to the other.”

According to Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the meeting they had at the White House in 2018 "was an important point" that allowed "three sensitive issues" to be unlocked - the relevance of the Azores, the supply of American liquid gas to Portugal and the Portuguese financial contribution to the NATO – and it is beneficial to have “a more intense relationship between heads of state”.

“Great victory”

Meanwhile, the leader of the Chega party has praised Donald Trump's "great victory".

"A great victory for Donald Trump in the USA. Against the interests of the established system, against traditional media, against woke globalism. America has changed today and turned to the right. Europe must do the same!", wrote André Ventura on X.

“Close collaboration”

Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, also congratulated Donald Trump on the result and said he was committed to working in “close collaboration” at bilateral and multilateral levels.

“Congratulations, President Donald Trump. I look forward to working closely with you, within the spirit of the long-standing and solid relationship between Portugal and the United States, bilaterally at NATO and multinational level”, wrote the Prime Minister on his X account.
