This special event took place on Tuesday, November 26, at noon, at the ADFA Building on Avenida Padre Cruz, in Lisbon, and celebrated the spirit of Thanksgiving with a traditional meal, typical of this North American holiday, for Portuguese war veterans with disabilities.
The lunch was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Defence, Paralympic athletes and U.S. Ambassador Randi Charno Levine. The meal was prepared by renowned Chef, Art Smith, an American TV presenter and author who has received the highest awards in the culinary profession and cooked for some of the world's most famous personalities.
Thanksgiving is an important U.S. holiday that dates back to the early 1600s, when English and Native American pilgrims shared a celebration of gratitude after a successful harvest. Over the centuries, it has evolved into a holiday where families and friends gather to give thanks for the blessings in their lives.
The event also featured entertainment provided by the band of the Army Pupils Institute.
Ambassador Randi Levine said, "As we enjoy this meal, I want to highlight the values of family, gratitude, and togetherness that are central to both American and Portuguese culture." She also added "the warmth of the Portuguese welcome, with an emphasis on hospitality, food and a sense of community, reflects much of what this holiday represents. We are excited to share this Thanksgiving lunch with veterans as well as active military personnel whose work inspires us."
