Despite recent changes to residency and tax rules for non-EU nationals, British demand for property in Portugal shows no signs of slowing down. The country's high quality of life, outdoor lifestyle, and affordability continue to attract an increasing number of Britons looking to relocate. In fact, according to AIMA (Agência para a Integração, Migrações e Asilo), British citizens now represent the fourth-largest group of foreign residents in Portugal, with 47,409 Brits calling the country home in 2023. This sustained popularity is largely driven by the desire for a slower, more relaxed pace of life, coupled with the rise of remote work, which has brought a growing number of younger professionals alongside retirees and businesspeople.

While Lisbon and Porto are growing in importance as destinations for foreign buyers, the Algarve remains a standout region, particularly for British citizens. A recent survey at the Moving to Portugal Show and Seminars revealed that 51.1% of attendees expressed an interest in property in the Algarve, reinforcing its reputation as the leading destination for those looking to buy property in Portugal.

The West Algarve: A Growing Hotspot for Britons

The 2023 Algarve Property Survey, conducted by the Portuguese Chamber of Commerce in partnership with DDM, highlighted several key factors that make the Algarve — and particularly the West Algarve — an attractive destination for British property seekers. The region is renowned for its stunning coastline, natural beauty, and authentic Portuguese charm.

Over 92% of survey respondents cited outdoor spaces such as gardens, swimming pools, and terraces as important considerations when buying property, while 67% of UK buyers indicated a preference for detached homes. This reflects a strong desire for privacy and tranquility — qualities that the West Algarve offers in abundance. Towns like Lagos, Aljezur, and Vila do Bispo provide a sense of seclusion while still offering easy access to essential amenities. With fewer crowds than the central Algarve, the West Algarve offers peaceful living in a region that remains well-connected.

The importance of a good view was also emphasised, with over 89% of respondents ranking it as a top priority. Many buyers in the West Algarve are drawn to properties overlooking the ocean or the region’s breathtaking natural landscapes. The cliffs, golden beaches, and sprawling countryside make the West Algarve the ideal setting for those who want to wake up to awe-inspiring views every day.

Although the West Algarve is known for its quieter, more rural character, it still offers residents easy access to essential services. According to the above mentioned survey, 42% of British respondents were noted to prefer to live within five minutes of local services, such as supermarkets, restaurants, and health clinics. Towns like Lagos strike the perfect balance of seclusion and proximity to these services, including private schools and healthcare centers. This accessibility, combined with the stunning surroundings, continues to make the West Algarve an appealing option for British buyers seeking both comfort and convenience.
