Through its roads and signage, Vila Real wants to showcase its medieval past. With the Vila Real Medieval project, the council seeks to maintain and showcase its legacy, which dates back to the Middle Ages, by revealing flagstone walkways, street windows and fountains. As part of the project, six trails have been established on flagstone pavements and interpretive signage describing the heritage's history has been implemented.
Mara Minha, the councillor for Culture has shared that “The main objective is to preserve and enhance the medieval heritage that we have. The council recognises the rarity of the heritage that we have in the municipality and our mission was to inventory it and study it”. The goal is to raise awareness of this medieval past among the local population so that they can value it, plus enable tourists to also experience that historic aspect whilst supporting the local economy.
There are about 50 street windows, according to Vítor Nogueira, the cultural manager for the local government, who also clarified that the houses to which the windows belong, may be used to do workshops or as taverns. Vila Real also has plenty of important fountains, such as the Chão Fountain, which was recently unveiled and the Cabo da Vila Fountain, designated as a monument of municipal interest.
Through the Provere Program, Norte 2020 provided funds for the project “Vila Real Mediaeval: Heritage Routes and Circuits” of approximately 235 thousand euros. Moreover, along with pamphlets, the municipality also released a four-minute educational film and the book “Six Paved Sidewalks in the Municipality of Vila Real”. As Vítor Nogueira further shared, “Our municipality is very rich in terms of medieval heritage and all parishes have one or more points of interest, particularly important in terms of the history that comes from the Middle Ages. In addition, all parishes were founded in the Middle Ages”.
