The data, referring to 2022 and 2023, is authored by the European Commission and serves to mark the festive season. In total, three parameters were analysed: the most popular regions throughout the year; the most popular regions year-round and in the winter months, and the regions with the highest concentration of stays during the winter months.

According to the data, in 2023, Mallorca was the most visited region between December 2022 and November 2023, recording more than 51 million overnight stays, followed by Paris, with almost 44 million, and Rome, with 41 million. Berlin, the Istrian peninsula in Croatia, Amsterdam and the Greek Cyclades islands recorded between 25 and 29 million overnight stays in 2023.

In the same year, there were significant increases compared to 2019 (between 5.5 and 3.1 million overnight stays) in Copenhagen, Ireland's second largest city Cork, Munich, the island of Lanzarote, Porto and the French region of Seine-et-Marne, reveals the European Commission.

Even in the coldest months, tourism in Portugal doesn't slow down. According to data from the European Commission, the Northern region appears as one of the regions in Europe that recorded the highest levels of concentration of stays during the winter months, more specifically between December 2022 and February 2023.

The Lisbon region, in addition to being one of the most popular destinations all year round, is also one of the favourite destinations during the colder months, similar to the south of Andalusia and Catalonia, in Spain.

In turn, the Algarve region, as usual, is one of the most popular destinations in Europe all year round.
