Unearthed in melting permafrost at the Batagaika crater, Yana will be studied by scientists at Russia’s North-Eastern Federal University, as part of ongoing discoveries driven by climate change.
The baby mammoth is believed to have been a 1-year-old, measuring 47 inches tall and weighing 220 pounds. She was found among the frozen remains of other pre-historic animals such as bison and horses.
