This measure is part of the tax simplification package presented by the government, at a joint press conference of the Ministers of Finance and Economy, after the Council of Ministers.
Currently, the IUC is paid in the month of registration of the vehicle, but "many people forget which month they bought the car, or it was purchased second-hand" and this generates delays in payment and fines, pointed out the Minister of Finance.
The Government has therefore decided to establish a month for the payment of IUC, if it is up to 100 euros, which will be February.
If it is above 100 euros, it will be made in two instalments, of equal value, paid in February and October, said Joaquim Miranda Sarmento.
The governor also highlighted that "this is a measure that will only come into effect in 2026" and that the IUC will be due by the car owner at the end of the year prior to the tax due.
This is not helpful at all. I pay mine in one go, now I'll have to log in to Finanças twice a year to check the payment references, and then make two separate payments from my bank account online. I don't need the government to manage or run my life, I was doing fine until this was announced . I'd prefer to continue paying it in one go, which gets it out of the way for a year.

Anything has to be better than the current system; it seems like it's made to produce as many fines as possible.
I have to pay in January, but usually the system won't let me pay until around the 15th. To even get the bill, I have to log into the financas portal and navigate through 5 pages before I find it.
Sometimes they send a notice, usually not; if the date is missed, even by an hour, I get a fine.
How can I be fined for not paying a bill I didn't receive?
Anyway, I do hope this archaic setup is improved.

I do hope they use some common sense and let us pay the whole lot in February - they do this with IMI so it should also be an option for car tax. I think people are more likely to "forget" the 2nd payment month than the month their car was first taxed

Yet more revenue! What do we see for all this tax? Just totally miserable "civil servants" if we have to visit Financas.

Why not monthly.... This feels like it would only burden the already slow and unresponsive Finanças website, not to mention how easily one might forget the second payment to get punched with a fine at the end of it...
